Relationships

Professional Development Session

Format: Mixed model, 2 hour interactive session; Prior to the session: read selected state publication pages, articles and handouts. View PowerPoint. During the session, video, discussion, and group work.

Relationships shape young children’s learning. From infancy, parent-child and family relationships guide and motivate children’s love for discovery and learning, and provide a secure foundation for the growth of exploration and self-confidence. In the classroom, young children’s relationships with special adults and friends contribute to their enthusiasm for preschool and the activities that contribute to their development. Equally important, as these central relationships are bridged through the teacher’s efforts to reach out to the family and to guide the growth of friendships, young children’s close relationships contribute in concert to the growth of early learning. (California Preschool Curriculum Framework, Volume 1). Prior to the session, participants read selections from state publications, access and read articles and handouts, and view the PowerPoint. During the interactive session, participants will view the streaming video and discuss how they might support classroom teachers to develop positive relationships with the children in their care.
