Professional Development Session

Format: Mixed model, 2 hour interactive session; Prior to the session: read selected state publication pages, articles, PowerPoint and handouts. View Ross Thompson presentation on streaming video. During the session, discussion and group work.

Social-emotional development indicates how preschool children acquire the social skills, self-awareness, and personal qualities that are interconnected with learning in a classroom. Interviews with preschool and kindergarten teachers indicate that children who have the greatest difficulties in learning are hindered by the lack of these social-emotional qualities more than by the inability to identify letters or numbers (California Preschool Curriculum Framework, Volume 1). Prior to the session, participants read selections from state publications, access and read the articles and handouts, and view the PowerPoint and streaming video presentations. During the interactive session, participants will discuss the role of social and emotional development in children’s school success.
