English Language Development Institute

The California Department of Education (CDE) is offering two-day English Language Development Professional Learning Institutes for Certified CPIN Trainers. These institutes provide a unique platform where certified CPIN trainers can gather to hear the latest updates from national researchers, deepen knowledge and expertise in English language development, receive new learning modules to deliver to the field, and receive important updates to current modules based on current trends and new information from the field. All attendees leave with a variety of tools and resources to provide CPIN training and technical assistance.

Session Descriptions

Day 1 

Research Updates
This session will include important updates and extensions to the foundational research the English language development domain in Early Learning Foundations and Curriculum Frameworks were based upon. Linda Espinoza will share updates English language development research, share highlights from the newly released national report and demonstrate how it aligns directly to Preschool Learning Foundations and strategies in the Curriculum Framework. Participants will have an opportunity to ask Dr. Linda Espinoza questions and discuss
the new information with their colleagues.

Adult Learning and Presentation Skills

This session will provide information about Adult Learning Theory and how the key strategies are applied in the existing modules. Additionally, information about the newly updated adult learning competencies will be shared and participants will have opportunities to practice applying this information through hands on activities focused on the domain modules of the institute.

 

Day 2

PEL Guide Track

This session will provide the necessary training to become certified as a Preschool English Language Guide Trainer. Participants who complete certification may provide training in the 6.5 hour PEL Guide training, 3 hour extended chapter 7 training, and the 4 hour extended chapter 8 training.

PEL Guide Module Extensions for  Training and  Technical Assistance

This session will include a hands-on experience with the new learning materials available for deliver by certified CPIN leads, instructors and partners. In order to gain access to these new materials  individuals must be present at this session. Trainers will provide key information on the purpose and delivery methods.

 

Making Connections to Extend Learning with CPIN Dual Language Learner Resources

This session will include time for regional reflection and planning based on the research highlights provided by Dr. Linda Espinoza as well as connecting to other new and available resources to suppor CPIN ongoing training and technical assistance.

Target Audience

To meet the need of the changing field, all CPIN certified leads, instructors and partners are invited to this one-day Volume 1 series. To maintain certification in volume 1 domains, trainers must be present at the respective domain institute. If unforeseen circumstances arise and you cannot attend, a make-up experience will be scheduled for the summer of 2019.

Institute Prerequisite

Completion of phases 1-3 CPIN Certification or completion of phase 1-2 and in process of phase 3 completion.

Professional Growth Hours

The forums offer 16 professional growth hours. CEUs or academic credit is available upon request from CSU Channel Islands.
