Equip young students who are learning English as a second language by supporting the developmental progression of listening and speaking skills! Active listening is an essential aspect of oral language development, and understanding what is heard, is critical to the development of reading and writing skills. We will study the connection between listening and speaking, examining this developmental continuum in English Language Development. Stages of Second-Language Development will be explored, including developmentally appropriate strategies and ways to scaffold learning for all students. Intentional emphasis will be placed on how to plan culturally and linguistically responsive classrooms.

Current research and resources from the CA Department of Education will be examined; practical classroom strategies will be shared; materials will be provided.
