Enhance reading development for English Learners by providing literacy rich opportunities! As oral language develops for English Learners, one of the first steps in reading is the appreciation and enjoyment of hearing print read out loud. This continuum of reading development moves forward as students start to demonstrate awareness that print carries meaning; they may begin to show progress in their knowledge of the alphabet in English, phonological awareness, and aspects of book handing and book reading. We will review this developmental progression, providing strategies of best practice to enhance reading development and activities to engage young English Learners in the learning process.

Current research and resources from the CA Department of Education will be examined; practical classroom strategies will be shared; materials will be provided.
