Social Emotional Institute

The California Department of Education (CDE) is offering two-day Social Emotional Professional Learning Institutes for Certified CPIN Trainers. These institutes provide a unique platform where Certified CPIN trainers can gather to hear the latest updates from national researchers, deepen knowledge and expertise in social emotional development, receive new learning modules to deliver to the field, and receive important updates to current modules based on current trends and new information from the field. All attendees leave with a variety of tools and resources they can immediately utilize in providing CPIN training and technical assistance.

Session Descriptions

Day 1

Play Research and Introduction of New Play Document: This session will include an introduction to the next document in the Best Practices for Planning Curriculum and Instruction series focused on Play. Leading author Julie Nicholson  will share her perspectives on developing the play document, current research trends the document includes, and key information about how to support teachers impliment the principles, practices and strategies shared in the document. This will lay the foundation for the future CPIN module on the upcoming document.

Playful-Integrated Reflection and Planning This session will provide an integrated reflection opportunity to revisit the research presentations from Math, LLD and Social Emotional institute. Using information presenting in the The Powerful Role of Play in Education participants will reflect, plan and  practice applying this information to extend CPIN learning experiences unique to each region and upcoming modules.

Day 2

CPIN Trainer Skills for Sensitive Topics: Promoting Optimal States of Regulation: This session will include evidenced-based strategies for trainers to utilize when facilitating sensitive topics. For example, in discussing social emotional development, teachers may often experience heightened sensitivity due to their own life experiences; this may affect the conversation and learning potential for that individual as well as the entire group. In this session, participants will reflect upon their own experiences, identify and practice strategies that may support teachers as they are learning and discussing sensitive topics. 

CPIN Module Family Partnerships and Culture: This session will include a hands-on experience with the Family Partnership and Culture module available for deliver by certified CPIN leads, instructors and partners. In order to gain access to the module, individuals must be present at this session. Trainers will provide key information on the purpose and deliver methods of the module in addition to an extended conversation and practice applying the strategies from session one: CPIN Trainer Skills for Sensitive Topics: Promoting Optimal States of Regulation.

Target Audience

To meet the need of the changing field, all CPIN certified leads, instructors and partners are invited to this one-day Volume 1 series. To maintain certification in volume 1 domains, trainers must be present at the respective domain institute. 

Institute Prerequisite

Completion of phases 1-3 CPIN certification or completion of phase 1-2 and in process of phase 3 completion.

Professional Growth Hours

The forums offer 16 professional growth hours. CEUs or academic credit is available upon request from CSU Channel Islands.
