The Preschool Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations (PTKLF) provide teachers, families, and the public with a clear understanding of the wide range of knowledge and skills that children age three to five and a half typically attain when attending a high-quality early education program, with the understanding that children develop these competencies at different times and in different ways.

The PTKLF also describe the knowledge and skills that serve as the foundation for long-range learning and academic achievement in kindergarten through grade twelve. The PTKLF describe expectations across nine domains in early learning and development in a similar way that the content standards in K–12 define the knowledge, concepts, and skills that students should acquire in various content areas at each grade level.

PTKLF Introduction Learning Outcomes:

• Review the organization of California Preschool/Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations (PTKLF) for children aged three to five and a half in early education programs.

• Explore how PTKLF promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

• Recognize the PTKLF Guiding Principles.
