Young Boys of Color Training

The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) is excited to announce new free training opportunities aimed at empowering and supporting young boys of color across the state. These training opportunities reflect the California Department of Education’s publication: “Creating Equitable Early Learning Environments for Young Boys of Color: Disrupting Disproportionate Outcomes.” Everyone working with children ages 0–5 and supporting those in the early childhood workforce is welcome to attend.

Training is delivered in collaboration with WestEd, California Preschool Instructional Network (CPIN), Resource and Referral (R&R), or Young Boys of Color (YBOC)- authorized trainers. Depending on the delivery mode, actual titles, activities, content amount, and professional development (PD) hours will vary. Each presentation, webinar, or module addresses one chapter.

YOUNG BOYS OF COLOR ONE DAY IN-PERSON TRAINING WITH TWO COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE (CoP)

Delivered by WestEd. Total 7 PD hours.

Delivered by CPIN, WestEd, or R&R Staff
Series of four 2-hour sessions (coming in March 2025). Total 8 PD hours.

  • Presentation 2: Foundations for an Equitable and Responsive Early Education for Boys of Color

YOUNG BOYS OF COLOR IN-PERSON SERIES

Delivered by CPIN instructors or YBOC-authorized trainers
Series of four 3-hour sessions. Must attend all four sessions. Total 12 PD hours.

YOUNG BOYS OF COLOR CALIFORNIA EARLY CHILDHOOD ONLINE (CECO) MODULES

Six asynchronous stand-alone modules. A facilitator module is available to present the six modules synchronously. Total 11.5 PD hours.

  • Module 2: Addressing Implicit Bias in Early Childhood Environments (2 hours)
  • Module 3: Creating Equitable Environments Where Young Boys of Color Can Thrive (2 hours)
  • Module 4: Intentionally Communicating Love, Respect, and Genuine Care to Young Boys of Color (2 hours)
  • Module 5: Building Respectful, Responsive, and Reciprocal Relationships with Families of Color (1 hour)
  • Module 6: Caring for Yourself and Others to Ensure Sustainable Change (1 hour)
  • Module 7: Facilitator Module: Young Boys of Color (1.5 hours)

YOUNG BOYS OF COLOR ONE DAY TRAINING OF TRAINERS (ToT)

Total 7 PD hours.
The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) is funding free in-person Training of Trainers (ToT) for staff wishing to become a trainer for Creating Equitable Early Learning Environments for Young Boys of Color: Disrupting Disproportionate Outcomes. This is a unique opportunity for professional development providers who wish to become certified YBOC trainers for their agency. Completing the online CECO modules is a pre-requisite.
